Austin Zoo was founded in 1990 as a farm animal rescue. As exotics were added to the population, the name was changed in 1994 to Austin Zoo. In 1999, Austin Zoo became a not for profit organization. Now in our 29th year, we take in animals that have no place else to go. Many of our animals were purchased as exotic pets and came to us when their owners could no longer care for them. We accept animals from the courts and wildlife enforcement agencies, from research laboratories and from other zoos and sanctuaries who can no longer house them. Austin Zoo relies on grants, admissions, gift shop sales, fundraisers and individual and business donations to operate and fulfill our mission of assisting animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Austin Zoo receives no government funding.
