The mission of Outside the Lens is to empower youth to use digital media to create positive change within themselves, their community and their world. We engage youth, encourage them to tell their stories, and teach them that participation in their community’s future makes a difference.

Since 2001, over 15,000 OTL students have learned photography, film, and other digital media arts through hands-on projects exploring identity, family, community, the environment, and the world. Our four core programs develop students’ artistic abilities and creative voice, give them the opportunity to exhibit their work to the public, and provide high-quality arts education while building literacy and competency in digital media. Our flagship program, Cameras in the Classroom, includes arts integration program that engages students with Common Core curriculum in a new, exciting way. Cameras in the Classroom also provides students with after-school programs teaching photography and film fundamentals and teachers with training on how to better incorporate the digital arts into their classrooms. Through Cameras in the Community Outside the Lens brings the power and tools of digital storytelling to underserved communities throughout San Diego with film screenings and festivals, skill-building workshops, and artist residencies. The Cameras and Careers program, including our high school Youth Council and Flash Forward internship, connects students with portfolio development, career pathways, and mentors from the digital arts profession. Finally, Cameras Across Cultures links Outside the Lens ambassadors around from countries including Colombia, Thailand, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Jordan with the curriculum and materials to run our programs in their schools and communities.
