START Rescue California Shelter Animal Relocation Transport (Flagship) Program provides a minimum of twelve life-saving monthly transports in The Beast and many "mini -Transports in smaller vehicles as needed. These transports will contain all breed dogs and cats including mamas and babies, seniors, special needs and puppies along with a minimum of 10% bully breeds as mandated in our mission statement. Many will be rescued off the euthanasia lists from high kill and small rural shelters in Southern and Central California to begin new lives in the Pacific Northwest with vetted/under contract rescue partners.

In March 2017, START launched it’s 38 foot customized Motorhome, "The Beast" retrofitted for long distance animal transport. We have increased the quantity of crates to 86 allowing us to transport, depending on breed/size up to 200 shelter animals monthly in safety and complete comfort. A 24/7 on-call vet has also been added as a team member.

In addition to having a sanitary environment, especially with outbreaks of airborne illness on the rise, START has instituted a 15-point inspection, before and after transport. Along with Best Practices for Animal Transports, we keep a watchful eye on USDA/AAHA regulations and updates.

We anticipate that we will transport/save approximately 1,500 – 2,000 shelter animals per year in The Beast.

The relocation transports to under-populated Oregon and Washington, removes some of the burden of the overcrowded/high euthanasia in California animal shelters. It also helps to increase their live release rate and frees up valuable resources (staff, etc.) to improve care and increase socialization of their residents.
