Dominican Republic: Rural Chocolate Tour
Add to cart
Keteka is a marketplace where travelers can book unique, authentic tours and activities with validated local guides. While serving in the Peace Corps in rural Panama, the founders were working on community tourism projects and realized that they wanted to create a better way to connect purposeful travelers with authentic, local experiences. "Keteka" is an indigenous Panamanian word that means "to get close to" and that's our goal, to bring you closer to your destination's culture, food, people, and natural environment.
Experience The Dominican Republic From A Local Perspective With This Delicious Chocolate Tour.
This chocolate tour is associated with CONOCADO, the national confederation of Dominican cacao producers. There are two tour options: one from the Bloque in Hato Mayor to the farmlands of Vicentillo, and the other from Bloque in El Seibo to the farmlands of Los Botados. The tour starts at 9:00a.m in the Bloque (processing plant for cocoa) where a guide (and a translator if needed) greets and begins the tour with a cup of hot chocolate and an introduction of what the day will entail. There is a full tour of the Bloque: reception, fermentation, natural and artificial drying, and exportation. From there you’ll journey to the country side and take a tour of the farm lands of cocoa. You’ll be given the opportunity to participate in planting and cutting the pods off the tree, as well as a chance to taste raw cocoa. After a break in the gazebo with fruit and hot chocolate, you’ll be taken to make cocoa as a souvenir to take home.
