Tourism is one of Carlsbad’s biggest industries. With the Carlsbad Cavern National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park, there is a ton to do and see here. Especially when it comes to outdoor life, Carlsbad is very much a city of exploration. The Caverns particularly, draw half a million visitors a year, all eager to check out, among other things, a 4000ft limestone chamber known as the Big Room.
Th city is located on the Pecos River, which means fans of water activities will also love the experiences that Carlsbad offers. Not to mention Lake Carlsbad features some active beaches and a greenway around which people can stroll.
  • CARLSBAD CAVERNS

    This is most definitely the city’s main attraction. There are a number of rooms or chambers throughout the caverns in which visitors can check out rock formations, fissures, as well as 17 different bat species. Visit the Big Room, explore Lechuguilla Cave or make your way through Chocolate High consisting of small passages above a mud filled pit.

  • CHRISTMAS ON THE PECOS

    Quite the event, Christmas on the Pecos gives visitors a pretty cool look at some amazing light displays. Take a boat ride along the river and see over a hundred homes decked out in all of their Christmas glory.

  • LIVING DESERT STATE PARK

    This is a botanical and wildlife preserve that shows visitors what life in the Chihuahuan Desert is like. Among the animals, there are bison, prairie dogs and eagles. Beyond cacti, you can check out flowers that are indigenous to the desert as well as just walk through and marvel in the landscape in general.

THE WEATHER
  • The area has some fun holiday celebrations. The weather is mild and dry, with highs around 60.

  • Spring has great weather and small crowds. April's highs are in the upper 70s with lots of sun.

  • Summers can get blazing hot, and can be an uncomfortable time in Carlsbad.

  • Most experts suggest that the best time to visit just about anywhere in New Mexico is September through October. The weather is warm.
