Located in one of the western most parts of Texas, Big Bend National Park is a combination of desert, mountains, scenic views and an abundance of wildlife species. Visitors here can also enter Mexico via the park’s Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry. All told, you can spend days here and still not see nearly enough of it.
The Rio Grande curves throughout the region and has over the centuries carved amazing canyons throughout Big Bend. There are numerous ways to see this majestic landscape. Biking, hiking horseback riding and river rafting are among the most popular.
  • HISTORIC DISTRICTS

    Within the park itself there are several historic districts that let visitors see the ruins of camps, graves, even trading posts. Castolon for instance, still has an adobe structure as well as a store. While Mariscal Mine features the oldest mercury mine in the state.

  • HIKING

    Whether by river, in the mountains or through the desert, Big Bend National Park gives you some amazing options when it comes to hiking and sightseeing. The Chihuahuan Desert covers about 80% of the park, and the Chisos Mountains provide about twenty miles worth of stunning trails.

  • ALL THOSE BIRDS

    Because of the unique location and climate, Big Bend National Park is home to hundreds of bird species. It really is a bird watcher’s paradise. The Visitors Center even offers a list of birds you might be lucky enough to spot.

THE WEATHER
  • If you are visiting the park, try to plan it for spring or fall. Winters are very cold and the park gets snow.

  • March and April are a couple of the best months to visit, as it warm but not yet scorching hot. Daily highs are in the 80s.

  • Summers are very hot. Daily highs are regularly in the mid- to upper-90s.

  • October is probably the best month of the year to visit. Crowds aren't terrible, even though the weather is near perfect. Daily highs are in the mid-80s with nightly lows in the mid-60s. It is great camping weather.
