Located on the Arizona-Utah border and in a region known as the Colorado Plateau, Monument Valley is one of the most scenic sites on the planet! In fact, it has been photographed and featured in everything from famous movies to prominent magazines. The valley consists of huge sandstones buttes—some reach upwards of 1000 ft high. Standing before them and looking up at them is truly a majestic experience.
Many say that this is the quintessential western setting: red rock formations surrounded by an otherwise flat desert like landscape. US 163 is the only road that goes through Monument Valley, while there are several rougher dirt and rock trails that branch off of the main route.
  • NAVAJO TRIBAL PARK

In this park is where some of the “hidden” parts of Monument Valley can be seen. With one trail running through it (Wildcat Trail) and the well-known Lookout Point from which tourists can check out some of the more photographed areas in the valley, this is definitely a must-visit when in the Monument Valley area.

  • LODGING

Currently there are only 2 places to stay right within Monument Valley. People can opt for Gouldings Lodge or the View Hotel. If those are booked or beyond your budget, you can also choose to stay in the nearby town of Kayenta.

  • ACTIVITIES

Hiking is likely on the agenda. You can also go for a private jeep tour, explore the valley on horseback, even do a scenic drive along route 163. The main thing is to see the region up close and in person—the only way to truly experience its wonder.

THE WEATHER
  • Winter is an off-season, as the weather drops into the 40s for daily highs. The area is dry year-round so you don't have to plan around a rainy season. Avoid the winter as you'll want to explore this beautiful area.

  • Late spring may be the best time of year to visit. On average, May's daily highs are in the upper-70s with lots of sunshine.

  • Summer is a busy time to play outside, but it does get very warm. Average July high temps hit 94 degrees.

  • Early fall is another great time to visit. September highs average 83 degrees.
