Vancouver, Washington is the largest suburb of Portland, Oregon. Vancouver sits across the Columbia River. Vancouver was once a fur trading outpost, and the city has several sites and museums that celebrate the city’s storied past. Vancouver has shopping, restaurants, and parks built along the river, including the 5-mile Waterfront Renaissance Trail. The trail is a fantastic way of getting a feel of the city and the river.
  • BEER

Portland is the number one city in the country for beer. One advantage of being a suburb of Portland is that Vancouver has captured the same microbrewery culture. A few good options are Loowit Brewing Company, Ghost Runners, and Trap Door Brewing.

  • PARKS

Vancouver has several great parks and trails. Esther Short Park is a historic park that regularly hosts events and concerts. For dog lovers, Pacific Community Park has an off-leash dog park and trails for running or biking.

  • HISTORICAL SITES

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a great visit for the history buffs. Take a walk down Officers’ Row, which is a row of houses of where officers and their families lived when stationed at the Vancouver Barracks in the mid-1800s. The first house built on this stretch was the Ulysses S. Grant House.

THE WEATHER
  • Vancouver weather is pretty identical to Portland. Winters are mild and wet. There are two good reasons to visit in the winter. The first is to see a home game for the Portland Trailblazers. The other is the proximity to Mount Hood for skiing and winter sports.

  • Spring can be unpredictable with fluctuating temperatures and a fair amount of rain.

  • Summer is the best time to visit with consistently warm and fairly dry weather. It is also peak tourism season so rates are higher. The city is alive with events and activity.

  • Early fall can be a good time to visit, as you may miss the crowds and still enjoy warm and dry weather. Daily high temps in September are in the mid-70s.
